September films / películas de setiembre

If you read this blog frequently then you already know that Ryan Gosling is one of my favorite actors. And this month I has the chance to see him in Only God Forgives (2013), directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, who had already surprised me with Drive. Only God Forgives is an extraordinary film about revenge. With exquisitely assembled scenes, the director creates unforgettable violent sequences. There are fascinating characters and the acting is top notch. I would say this was truly of one the best 2013 films.

Gangster Squad (2013) reunites Josh Brolin, Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in Los Angeles in the 50s. The mob runs rampant, and a special undercover squad is the city’s last chance. A very correct historical reconstruction and a good group of actors turn this into a very interesting production.

Director Carter Smith impressed me tremendously with Bugcrush, one of the best short films I’ve seen in my life. So I was really looking forward to seeing Jamie Marks is Dead (2014), a remarkable exercise of subtle horror, teenage sexuality and the concept of loss. Jamie Marks (played by Noah Silver) is an average high school student and also a victim of bullying. Until one day he is murdered. Adam (Cameron Monaghan) remembers the dead boy, but at the same time feels guilty for never helping him against the bullies. Soon, Adam starts seeing the ghost of Jamie, and slowly but surely, this phantasmagorical presence becomes an important part of his life. The filmmaker creates a captivating atmosphere in which life seems to fade away to embrace the coldness of death, as Adam goes deeper into the world of the ghosts, withdrawing from his normal life, rejecting his mother (Liv Tyler) and putting her girlfriend, Morgan Saylor, on a second plane. One of the best films of the year. I really recommend it.

Hideo Nakata’s Chatroom (2010) deals with perversion and teenage angst. When Aaron Taylor-Johnson (famous for his protagonic role in Kick-Ass), a manipulative teenager, creates a chatroom for outcast youngsters, he makes them believe they’ve found a safe haven online, a place where they can be themselves… he provides them with a false sense of security. The teen has but one goal in his mind: to convince Matthew Beard, an insecure boy, to commit suicide. Nakata expresses the ever-changing environment of the web in a very creative manner, while conveying the despair of youth with conviction.

Miguel Arteta’s Youth in Revolt (2009) is a funny, rebellious and mischievous proposal. Michael Cera is a horny teenager who spends his days masturbating and fantasizing about girls that never pay attention to him. He shares his frustration with his best friend Erik Knudsen, until one day, on vacation, his luck finally changes. He meets Portia Doubleday, a lovely girl, and he falls in love with her. But at the same time, he develops an alter ego, a double personality. His exscinded mind allows him to commit vandalism and many other things that he will regret later on, but now he is brave enough to actually lose his virginity. Youth in Revolt is a breadth of fresh air and an amazing portrait of youth.

Beginners (2010), written and directed by Mike Mills, focuses on the lives of Ewan McGregor, a lonely man who has problems meeting girls, and Christopher Plummer, his father, an old man who comes out of the closet after decades of pretending to be straight. The filmmaker compares 2 different eras, the 60s and the present, and how morality, sexuality and social demands shifted and transmuted into something else. In the past, the heterosexual normative reigned supreme, in the present, the option of being gay is acceptable. Mélanie Laurent also plays an important role as McGregor’s new couple. Dramatic, sad, deeply evocative and touching, Beginners is a heartfelt analysis of the joys and frustrations of love, both gay and straight.

Matthew Mishory writes and directs Joshua Tree 1951: A Portrait of James Dean (2012), a biopic centered on teen idol and “rebel without a cause”, James Dean (played by James Preston) on the cusp of becoming famous. As a bisexual young man, James Dean has sexual encounters with men and women, and he takes advantage of his boyish charm to seduce big shot Hollywood producers. Combining a documentary style with a lightly experimental filmmaking technique, Mishory recreates the secrets of an icon of the 7th art.

More Than Friendship (2013) is a peculiar movie about two boys and a girl that have a very intimate relationship, they’re friends but they also have sex with each other. It has a couple of interesting moments but overall this was quite a disappointing German production.

From France comes Les garçons et Guillaume, à table! (2013), a chronicle of the life of Guillaume Gallienne, a young man who struggles to discover his sexual identity. With plenty of humor and originality, this coming of age tale manages to capture the frustration of not knowing what sexual role one is supposed to play.

my drawing / mi dibujo

Planetary # 6 - Warren Ellis & John Cassaday

A brilliant mind can be both: a gift and a curse. A superior intellect can never be a guarantee of a happier or better life. It all depends on the decisions we make with the resources available to us. Even a genius can turn his life into hell. “It’s a Strange World” (published in November 1999) introduces the Four into the world of the Archeologists of the Impossible.

The Four are a group of space explorers led by Randall Dowling, arguably Earth’s brightest scientific mind. Of course, this man shares many similitudes with Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), the leader of the Fantastic Four; then there is Jacob Greene, a pilot slightly reminiscent of Ben Grimm, AKA the Thing; William Leather, the youngest in the team, would be the equivalent of Johnny Storm, best known as the Human Torch; finally, Kim Süskind, the only woman, would be Susan Storm, AKA the Invisible Woman.

As part of a secret space rocket program developed by Nazi scientists employed by the US Government, the mission of this team is to land on the Moon. And so they leave Earth on 1961, except they never make it to the Moon. Instead, they collide against an impossible energy emanation, a fractal explosion similar to the one witnessed by the agonizing heroes from “All Over the World”.

The origin of the Four / el origen de los Cuatro
Irradiated by this energy, the explorers gain extraordinary abilities. They are no longer human. But unlike the Fantastic Four, they are not here to make the world a better place. If Reed Richards had the generosity and kindness to share his discoveries and scientific breakthroughs, it was because he considered his brain to be a gift. Randall Dowling, on the other hand, is cursed with this superior intelligence, and so he refuses to spend his time saving lives or improving the world. Warren Ellis proves that being a genius is one thing, and being a hero is something else entirely.

If the Fantastic Four are Marvel’s premiere superhero family, and the most noble heroes one could think of, the Four are the most dangerous and lethal villains in the history of mankind. Just like William Leather explains to Elijah Snow: “We are optimal humans. We are explorers, scientist gods, the secret heroes of a world that doesn’t deserve us”. Wrapped up in arrogance and deliriums of grandeur, the Four have poisoned the lives of the people around them, halting progress and sabotaging scientific innovations.

Elijah Snow and Jakita Wagner make a mistake. They try to attack Four Voyagers Plaza, the building owned by the Four. The attack is quite unsuccessful, and in the end Elijah Snow is shocked by the fact that William Leather knows a lot more than he should about his past.

As usual, I would like to take a moment to talk about John Cassaday’s amazing art. One of his best pages here is the one that shows the “Subterrans”, an underworld race similar to the “Moloids” from the Fantastic Four. The desiccated corpses of three murdered Subterrans is evidence enough of the cruelty of the Four. The fighting sequence between Jakita and Leather is quite impressive, as well as the confrontation between Leather and Snow.

Jakita Wagner versus William Leather

Elijah Snow & William Leather

KICK-ASS 3 - Millar & Romita Jr.

Kick-Ass feels frustrated for his constant failures, and the laziness and apathy of some of his teammates. Finally, he decides to exile the fat man who had moved into Hit-Girl’s secret HQ and turned it into his home. But this causes a schism between the ranks of Justice Forever. As they all say, this is their own Civil War (a clever reference to Mark Millar’s Marvel event in which superheroes fight against each other).

Irony is a fundamental ingredient in Millar’s Kick-Ass, and while Dave Lizewski is sewing his costume his friend Todd is having sex with a former high school teacher; in this case a woman that inspired many of Dave’s masturbatory –and marathonic– sessions (as seen in the pages of the comic as well as in the opening scenes of the first movie). Affirming that Kick-Ass is trapped in a pathetic life would be an understatement. Not only is he trapped but he’s also forced to hear the constant shouts of ecstasy that come from the adjacent bedroom. I can’t think of anything worse than a case of blue balls aggravated by the proximity of very loud sexual activity.
Dave & Valerie

Eventually Kick-Ass finds in a girl named Valerie a possible love interest. They go out on a few dates and Dave, subjugated by his horniness forgets everything he learnt under Hit-Girl’s training and decides to get intimate with Valerie. There is a deliciously awkward moment in which Dave tries to get under the girl’s skirt and she tells him to take it slow. He stops altogether and Valerie explains that ‘slow’ doesn’t mean ‘stop’.

And suddenly Dave’s personal big bang is about to happen. And the sexual explosion destroys everything he knew or thought he knew about himself. In the following days, Dave stops wearing his Kick-Ass costume, he misses the reunions with the members of Justice Forever, he stays indoors instead of going out and patrolling the streets. In short, he says goodbye to his life as Kick-Ass. And he couldn’t be happier about that. After all, he’s getting plenty of sex.

His days as a chronic masturbator are over, and now with all the vigor of youth, Dave achieves some remarkable feats, such as ejaculating 7 times in the same day. And it’s all thanks to the insatiable Valerie. This is not only a clever plot twist but also a much needed revision of the topic of the superhero’s weakness. For some it is kryptonite, for others it may be the color yellow, for Dave is a wet pussy. But then again, isn’t that a weakness shared by millions of men?

In one short and hilarious dialogue, Millar gives a rather accurate diagnosis on superheroes. Why do they spend their lives dressing up and punching the hell out of delinquents? Like Valerie says “Maybe it was all just sexual repression and your energy is used elsewhere these days”. For the first time in his life, Dave is happy. Like Freud said once, neurosis is a consequence of sexual repression. And if every superhero in the world should follow Dave’s example, their mental problems would be solved at once.
Dave forgets about his life as Kick-Ass /

After sinking into the lowest pit of pathetism, Chris Genovese once again rises. And in one of Millar’s most unexpected and, at the same time, most fascinating plot twists, he finds the way to rescue Hit-Girl –a task not even Kick-Ass managed to accomplish– and, in the process, he redeems himself. What happens after the rescue, of course, is as inevitable as it is sad.

I must admit that, as I got closer to the final pages, I experienced an unprecedented level of emotion. There are many moments of tenderness, for instance, when Dave hugs Mindy, in a fraternal embrace, just before the most dangerous battle of their young lives. Hit-Girl fights against the mob, while Kick-Ass rescues his friend Todd. I won’t say who lives or dies, as the surprise of discovering it pertains to the reader. Suffice to say, I was deeply moved by the final sequences. I am genuinely happy to have been a part of Millar’s proposal, to have been lucky enough to follow Kick-Ass adventures since almost the beginning.

After 8 years, it’s hard to explain how excited I was to read the grand finale. It isn’t easy to create a new character and turning him into the most fascinating hero of the decade. And yet, I’d venture to say that Millar succeeded in doing it. He took Dave Lizewski, nerd kid, comic book reader, and turned him into someone real, someone who actually grows up as we read the comic, and the same happens with Mindy. From 2006 to 2014, Dave and Mindy change and through their journey they change us. That is perhaps the highest accomplishment a writer can wish for.

the final battle / la batalla final

Hit-Girl surprises the enemy / Hit-Girl sorprende al enemigo

KICK-ASS 3 - Mark Millar

Most writers spend entire decades mimicking the style of their predecessors, unable to come up with new ideas. Only a few seem to have what it takes to reenergize the medium, to resurrect our passion towards a genre that is so easily cluttered with trivial titles and meaningless sagas. With Kick-Ass, writer Mark Millar unleashed his creativity and unlocked his potential as an author that could succeed outside the big two.

This third and last volume begins with the tribulations of Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl, still recovering from recent events. Hit-Girl is in jail, waiting to be rescued. But when weeks turn into months she realizes that the incompetence of Kick-Ass and his improvised group of self-appointed “superheroes” is greater than she had imagined.
Life after high school / la vida después de la secundaria

Hit-Girl understands that, and she manages to hold her ground in jail, killing inmates or maiming them as she sees fit. There is one memorable scene in which a psychiatrist visits her. In a way, this is a parody of the classic mental games between an imprisoned dangerous criminal and a normal person. We’ve seen similar sequences in “The Silence of the Lambs” (Hannibal Lecter and agent Clarisse Sterling) and most especially in “Watchmen” (Rorschach and Dr. Malcolm Long). In fact, if we reread Alan Moore’s magnum opus, we’ll remember that Dr. Malcolm Long eventually starts suffering from mental fatigue and anxiety after his sessions with Rorschach; the same has already happened with Hit-Girl’s first two shrinks, but the new one seems to be more resilient. Still, the dialogue between the perfect assassin and a doctor with good intentions is priceless.

Meanwhile, Hit-Girl’s old headquarter is now a playground for adults that behave like children. One of Dave’s associates decides to move in. He is a fat man, a useless masked adventurer, an even bigger loser than the rest of the gang. Sitting on his dirty laundry while playing video games all day long, it’s clear that neither he nor any other member of ‘Justice Forever’ will fight to get Mindy out of jail.

If Dave Lizewski was the average high school loser at the beginning of the series, he’s now a mediocre young man, working in a fast food joint and sharing an apartment with his friend Todd. Dave is too self-absorbed in his own world. After the death of his father, he finds solace in the Kick-Ass persona, and he gets even more tangled than usual in the absurdity and ridiculousness of superhero conventions. He can’t even mourn his parents as a regular kid: “It’s also so much cooler when you’re brooding in a big, black coat. I tried this in my jeans last week but it all just looked so inappropriately casual”. Kick-Ass missions have now become even more futile and ludicrous than they ever were. But still, he keeps at it. He has to. There’s no normal life for him to get back to.
Kick-Ass & Justice Forever

In fact, even the slightest sense of normalcy will become a much-coveted asset. Hit-Girl is in jail, Kick-Ass is trying to adapt to a life devoid of grandeur. And even Chris –AKA the Motherfucker, formerly known as the Red Mist– is recovering from the multiple injuries, lesions and fractures he suffered at the end of the second volume of Kick-Ass. He may not have a normal life, but the one who is suffering the most is Angie Genovese, his mom; and not because, as a mother, she’s supposed to be worried about her son’s wellbeing... In fact, she feels repulsed and disgusted. Her life is miserable, she’s often insulted for giving birth to a homicidal monster. Still the woman visits the young man daily in the hospital. There she hears Chris complaints. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, he says. He’s in pain and he knows his life has been ruined. But she’s also in pain and her life has been ruined as well.

Mark Millar explores an aspect of the supervillain figure that has rarely been acknowledged: the impact that the villain has not on society or the hero community, but on those closer to him, in other words, his friends and family. Because while Chris selfishly whines about being prostrated in bed, or having his ass kicked by Kick-Ass, Angie Genovese is enraged: “You think this was MY PLAN. You think I grew you for nine months and fed you my milk just to watch you become a FIGURE of PUBLIC HATE? Your father only killed people for BUSINESS. You killed people for FUN”.

After long months of planning, Kick-Ass decides to intimidate mafia leader Rocco Genovese by recreating a classic scene from “Batman: Year One”. His goal is to instill fear in the hearts of the mobsters (just like Batman did in the classic Frank Miller miniseries). Of course, he fails. And he fails miserably.

Dave is about to get some / Dave está a punto de tener algo

Y fracasa miserablemente.

August comic books / cómics de agosto

Kick-Ass begun 8 years ago. I never imagined I would come to love this title so much; the end of the third volume is truly the end of an era. I will definitely miss the adventures of Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl. Also, Kick-Ass # 8 wins as the best issue of the month! If not for Kick-Ass, I would have given this award to Sandman Overture # 3; it was so impressive! I really enjoyed the first issue of Milligan’s Terminal Hero, and I had fun with The Wicked + The Divine, Outcast and Starlight. Unwritten continues to amaze me as it gets close to the end. I was pleasantly surprised by James Robinson’s Fantastic Four. Finally, Miracleman # 9 deserves its own review. And now, without further ado, here are August comics as per solicitations:

FANTASTIC FOUR #3
(W) James Robinson (A/CA) Leonard Kirk 'THE FALL OF THE FANTASTIC FOUR' PART 3 • The FANTASTIC FOUR were victorious defending Manhattan from inter-dimensional invasion but at a terrible cost!!! • Is this 'Flame Off' forever for the HUMAN TORCH? • Introducing a new stronger, deadlier version of the WRECKING CREW!!!

KICK-ASS 3 #8 (OF 8) (MR)
(W) Mark Millar (A/CA) John Romita. The epic series finale is here! Kick-Ass 3 dons the costume one last time…will he be going to his death or a triumphant ride into the sunset? And has months in lock-up dulled Hit-Girl's death-dealing reflexes just when she needs them the most? This milestone double-sized issue marks the end of one era and the start of a new Millarworld universe. Must not miss!

MIRACLEMAN #9
(W)  Various (A) Chuck Austen (CA) John Romita • The battle with Gargunza has ended. • The birth of Miracleman and Liz Moran's baby! • And a shocking surprise ending in this groundbreaking issue! • Including material originally presented in MIRACLEMAN (1985) #9, plus bonus content.  NOTE: This issue will be polybagged

OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #2
(W) Robert Kirkman (A) Paul Azaceta, Elizabeth Breitweiser (CA) Paul Azaceta. 'IT WATCHES FROM THE DARKNESS' In the second issue of KIRKMAN & AZACETA's horror epic, Kyle Barnes is still reeling from the revelations about demonic possession last issue and what they may mean about the time his mother was possessed.

SANDMAN OVERTURE #3 (OF 6) (MR)
(W) Neil Gaiman (A/CA) J. H. Williams. The armies of the night are gathering. The universe is beginning its final dance. Morpheus, far from home, walks the path of madness, accompanied only by himself.

STARLIGHT #5
Mark Millar & Goran Parlov

TERMINAL HERO #1 (MR)
(W) Peter Milligan (A) Piotr Kowalski (CA) Jae Lee. With Shade: The Changing Man, X-Statix, Doop and of course Hellblazer under his belt, Peter Milligan is now taking on Terminal Hero! Rory Fletcher is a good man. The problem is, he's dying of an inoperable brain tumor. And then his best friend introduces him to the mysterious Treatment Q. This strange and forbidden therapy might just save Rory's life. But its nightmarish side effects could make him question just how good he really is, and just how much he really does want to live.

UNWRITTEN VOL 2 APOCALYPSE #7 (MR)
(W) Mike Carey (A) Peter Gross (CA) Yuko Shimizu
In a dark land ruled by a crippled king, Tom Taylor searches for the one thing that can save the world - but only the pure of heart can even see it. And it probably never existed in the first place. And maybe the whole quest is a trap that's just been waiting for him to arrive...

UNWRITTEN VOL 2 APOCALYPSE #8 (MR)
(W) Mike Carey (A) Peter Gross (CA) Yuko Shimizu. In 'Sang' part three, to find the maanim, Sir Thomas must succeed where all other knights have failed. Which isn't going to be easy when his own identity keeps shifting, and when the story itself seems  determined to create a very different hero.

WICKED & DIVINE #3 (MR)
(W) Kieron Gillen (A) Jamie McKelvie, Matthew Wilson (CA) Matthew Wilson, Jamie McKelvie. Laura has no choice. She has to go underground to find the goth-goth-gothity-goth of the Morrigan. Is this the most ill-advised underworld-related decision since Orpheus decided to see how Eurydice was doing in the back seat? To find out, read the comic that people are literally calling 'The one by GILLEN/McKELVIE/WILSON with the very long title.'

WINTER SOLDIER BITTER MARCH #1
(W) Rick Remender (A) Roland Boschi (CA) Andrew Robinson. 1966: With Nick Fury missing, and presumed dead, global espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D. sends secret agent Ran Shen to collect two Nazi scientists with the key to defining who wins the Cold War. But the Americans are not the only ones who want the high value scientists. The Soviets have opened the Red Room, releasing their most dangerous operative --The Winter Soldier, who unbeknownst to the world, is the presumed-dead partner of Captain America-Bucky Barnes! The brainwashed soldier's mission: to acquire the scientists by any means or to kill them should they fall into American hands. This classic 60's style, high-octane, spy pulp told at Cold War's peak follows Ran Shen and his terrified scientists as they creep out of the shadow of East Berlin. Intrigue, adventure, romance and murder abound with ramifications that will shatter relationships in the modern-day Marvel Universe-including one with the Star Spangled Avenger himself!

FANTASTIC FOUR #3
(W) James Robinson (A/CA) Leonard Kirk

KICK-ASS 3 #8 (OF 8) (MR)

MIRACLEMAN #9
El nacimiento.

OUTCAST BY KIRKMAN & AZACETA #2 (MR)

SANDMAN OVERTURE #3 (OF 6) (MR)

STARLIGHT #5
Mark Millar & Goran Parlov.
